We Learn About Matariki (Maori New Year)

On Tuesday 24th May 2011 Room 2 walked to the Gisborne Museum Educational Centre to learn about Matariki (Maori New Year).   We learnt that Matariki is a tiny constellation of stars meaning Mata Riki (Tiny Eyes) and Mata Ariki (Eyes of God) and that the constellation is shaped like a fish.  The pre-dawn rise of Matariki could be seen in the sky from the 4th June 2011.

The children created beautiful artwork of the Matariki constellation using pastels and glitter and these have been proudly displayed on our classroom wall.  The students and the parents really enjoyed the learning experience and the walk to and from the Museum.
