The Last Day of the School Year for 2011

Its' a wrap!

Today, Wednesday 14th December, our school closed for 2011.

The children of Room 2 enjoyed a relaxed half day in class in each others company and exchanging Christmas cards and candy canes.

Our wonderful teacher Mr Swann received some well deserved Christmas presents from the children.

Mr Swann, Room 2 will miss you and we thank you for being a fabulous and cool teacher this year!

Room 2 wishes everyone a happy, safe Christmas holiday with their family and friends.

The students of Room 2 have all been good this year so I'm sure Santa will be coming your way!

Junior Celebration Assembly - December 2011

On Friday 9th December at 11am the Junior Syndicate put on a wonderful 'Celebration Assembly Performance' for parents.

Each class performed an item and Room 2 put on a sterling performance singing and dancing to 'We're all going on a summer holiday ..." They used sports equipment on stage as props and our very own 'Grace' started the item off by singing alone on stage!

The parents thoroughly enjoyed the performances from all the classes and had a few laughs on the way with the children.

Well done Room 2 for putting on an enthusiastic team effort.

What a lovely way to wrap up the year!

The School Disco

The end of year Central School disco was held on Wednesday 7th December commencing with the Junior Syndicate disco at 5.30pm.  The theme this year was formal attire and the children dressed up in all their finery!

The kids partied hard, the music was loud and included all the latest hits and the drinks, chippies, chocolate and sausages went down a treat!  The stand selling flashing glasses and glow sticks was a great hit with the children.

Sadly we couldn't get Mr Swann up on the dance floor but Room 2 was certainly part of the action!

Again it is thanks to the PSG (Parent Support Group) for organising the event and raising funds for our school.

Room 2 featured in the first race of the day with the 5 year old boys event and the boys ran one lap of the park then biked one lap. Those who did not have a bike participated in the run component only.

Our very own Bayley from Room 2 won the boys event so congratulations Bayley!

The next event was the 5 year old girls race and the Room 2 girls put on a determined performance and gave it their best!

Thanks to all the teachers, parent marshalls and our official race organizers, and of course the kids for participating with such enthusiasm.

Turanganui Schools' Maori Cultural Festival - November 2011

On Thursday 24th November the whole of Central School participated in the Turanganui Schools' Maori Cultural Festival at the Gisborne Events Centre. It was the first time all of the school students were part of the items.

The Junior Syndicate were first on stage and they delivered an enthusiastic performance.  This was followed at various stages throughout the day by the Middle Syndicate and Senior Syndicate.

Parents were welcome and there were many who came to enjoy the wonderful Waita. All the children performed with enthusiasm and pride on stage.

The event culminated in the mass Haka by some students from a number of the local schools.

Our very own Kapa Haka teacher Mr Swann accompanied the Central School children on stage playing his guitar and he was also part of the event organising team.

Well done Room 2!

The Central School Gala

On Sunday 20th November 2011 Central School held a gala which was organised by the PSG (Parents Support Group).  The weather was fabulous and there was a huge turnout by the community, students and parents.

There was so much to enjoy including a disco, face painting, outdoor cafe, book stall, art auction, baking stall, sausage sizzle/burger stand, white elephant stall, games, a visit from Santa, musical performances, raffles etc.

As you will most probably be aware the school raised over $20,000.

Thank you to the PSG for organizing such a huge event and also to everyone in Room 2 who provided baking and made the beautiful driftwood Christmas tree which sold at the auction for $55.

A big thank you to the parents from Room 2 who worked on the stalls at the Gala.

Well done everyone for such a team effort!

Room 2 Visit the Gisborne Museum / Junior Syndicate Assembly Certificates

On Tuesday 7th September Room 2 visited the Gisborne Museum Education Centre.  The learning was centred around three Maori shapes and experimenting with mixing colours. The shapes were:

The Koru - representing new life and growth.
The teeth-like triangular shapes of the Niho Taniwha - or 'dragon's' teeth; usually arranged in vertical rows with the apex at the top.
The Pataki (diamond shape, taken from the flounder fish) - a sacred symbol for Maori symbolizing balance between Ranginui (Sky Father) & Papatuanuku (Earth Mother).

The children learnt about the meaning of the shapes then experimented with some colour mixing, painting a yellow stripe onto paper then mixing in blue paint to make various shades of green, also painted onto the paper. They cut out the Maori shapes and stuck them onto the contrasting colours.

The class went on a hunt through the museum displays, looking for examples of the shapes.  They then thanked the teachers Aaron and koka Jen by performing a Waiata (song).

There was good support by parents who assisted with the learning and everyone enjoyed the walk in the sunshine to and from the Museum.

Room 2 made a real effort and they looked fabulous, as can be seen in the class photo.  During lunch break the Student Councilors ran some fun activities and there were prizes given out.

The School Disco was held that same evening,
run by the Parent Support Group (PSG)
and the Junior Syndicate event kicked off at 5.30pm.  There was a great turnout of excited children and parents. The school hall was decorated and there was a DJ playing.  Food, drink, a sausage sizzle, glow sticks and wrist bands were for sale. The children loved seeing their friends and dancing to all the latest songs and it was a great night!

We Learn About Matariki (Maori New Year)

On Tuesday 24th May 2011 Room 2 walked to the Gisborne Museum Educational Centre to learn about Matariki (Maori New Year).   We learnt that Matariki is a tiny constellation of stars meaning Mata Riki (Tiny Eyes) and Mata Ariki (Eyes of God) and that the constellation is shaped like a fish.  The pre-dawn rise of Matariki could be seen in the sky from the 4th June 2011.

The children created beautiful artwork of the Matariki constellation using pastels and glitter and these have been proudly displayed on our classroom wall.  The students and the parents really enjoyed the learning experience and the walk to and from the Museum.

Fun Fridays Rock

At the end of a long week, the children really enjoy 'Fun Friday' where we focus some lesson time on art, craft, cutting and drawing.  These activities develop the children's creativity, concentration, social skills and fine motor skills.

We have been learning about the changes that are happening around us including the seasons and we created some winter tree artworks.  We also created spring trees by drawing a tree and creating blossoms by ripping up pink tissue paper and gluing them on. Both these creations were shown to the junior syndicate when Room 2 led the assembly on Friday 27th May.

We also created bright giraffe artworks and learnt how to mix yellow and red paint to make orange.

Independent Reading

After morning interval each day our class practices reading and writing skills.
In groups the children choose a book and practice independent reading.  The groups then rotate between using the interactive whiteboard and activity tables to practice letter/sound recognition and high frequency words. We then go over the days reading book which is taken home each night to read again with family.

Week Two Junior Assembly Certificates

In Week Two Junior Syndicate Assembly, Harry, Elly and Brodie were awarded with certificates for quality work and excellence and always doing their best.
